Alleviating widespread rural poverty is crucial for any development programme to succeed. Equally important is building the capacity of rural community organisations, so that development initiatives will continue after the various initiating agencies have withdrawn.
FLD believes that the key factors that will enable vulnerable rural communities to overcome their poverty include:
- Strengthening their community based capacity
- Providing equitable access to relevant technology
- Improving access to financial services and markets.
By improving their management capacity, representatives of farmer organisations will be able to communicate better, build networks, advocate, and negotiate. This should result in better technical and financial support for community development.
Communication tools such as proposal writing are, therefore, an important means of informing interested agencies about individual communities.
